- Spongesquitoes - 11th of October 2021
XTRTN 1.3.1 is here. New Mesohyl module, new blank module (Heraldry) and fancy new screws. I was a bit late with making this post.
- Friendly Guide - 1st of October 2021
Yesterday I made the Modules page a little more user-friendly. Now each module has a full description (instead of just
explaining the individual parts) and the details can be collapsed - so it is a much more enjoyable page to browse casually.
There's also now a semi-walkthrough for solving the cryptic Puzzlebox module, the hints will make the process a lot easier
but it should still be very rewarding to walk through the steps. It explains what you need to do, rather than explicitly
how to do it.
- new tools - 29th of September 2021
Recently moved onto a new Artix(btw) laptop - got everything very neat and focused for programming and working on the website. Won't be using this computer for making music as that gets wav files everywhere. Also, I started using a media player properly for the first time. By that I mean, actually bothering to use the library functions, making playlists by artist/genre/album instead of playing tracks directly from files and folders. Found its made listening to music a lot more enjoyable, randomly playing from folders of favourite tracks was surprisingly monotonous. This is a really lame post, basically just an excuse to test updating my website from this computer. Epic.
- Jellyfish - 27th of September 2021
XTRTN 1.3 begins!
First, for 1.3.0, we have Mesoglea: a gates/mutes module with automation and a built-in SandH to synchronise changes to triggers. The guide has just been written, so you can stop being confused now :D
- Mononeura - 24th of September 2021
Version 1.2.1 - New module, Mononeura, added to the plugin. Thanks to Salix from the VCV forum for the suggestion to make a simplified
alternative to Meganeura. Mononeura also has a base-gate input for replacing the base parameter. As usual, everything is explained in the
Modules page. Finally, I corrected an typo on the Opabinia module, so now it does indeed say Opabinia rather than "Obapinia".
- Relay II - 25th of August 2021
Extratone Relay Vol. 1' is now floating around in the library - hopefully this will be the first of many
small Extratone compilations. Give it a listen, and then prepare yourself for Vol.2. Send me an email if you're interested
- I might not accept all tracks as I want to keep the compilations/splits in this series short (under 1 hour). Artists may have
2 tracks each. Deadline for Volume 2 is 1st of October.
- Gemini Space Mission - 13th of August 2021
I have built a gemini capsule. See here for more information.
- New EoS Page - 31st of July 2021
I'm working on a new page for my music as Eater of Sheep.
Check it out.
- Another Cambrian Lifeform Caught On Video - 19th of July 2021
Wow very Terreneuvian indeed.
- New EOS Album Out Now - 9th of July 2021
Surprise! I released a new Eater of Sheep album.
I mentioned a 4 track EP earlier, but I decided to throw on some more tracks to get an 8 track album. And some of these tracks are pretty long!
Its all melodic and improvised, but unlike my previous improvised release (Listen Fear Endure) the tracks know when to end to keep their momentum.
- Radio - 2nd of July 2021
The radio page is back. It is now used for mixes (rather than playing randomly from a list of tracks). First mix, as hinted at a few hours ago, is from Origin of Styx! Feeling very proud to have his work on the site!!
- Liminal Space - 2nd of July 2021
Currently listening to an excellent new doomcore album from Origin of Styx. If you like the atmosphere but want something a little more high-tempo, worry not! He has a similarly dark track in Extratone Sampler 3 as Taylor Hackett (Track 23: Taylor Hackett & Noise Spammer - Malacoda), and I will be releasing a mix of his dark-ambient-extratoene soon...
- Smiderswatter - 29th of June 2021
Today we celebrate the regeneration of Extratone Regeneration.
First, there is a new Smiderpan album, a compilation of experiments from the last few months:
Smiderpan - Modular Experiments.
Secondly, a new Flyswatter album, for the Extratone purists:
Flyswatter - More Tea and Biscuits.
- Licho Cassette - 28th of June 2021
7!cHo, the mind behind Extratone Records, has released a new cassette. Aside from track 4, you won't find many tones in there, but I strongly recommend giving the whole thing a listen. It is a beautiful tape packed with atmosphere and mechanical stutterings. Get it here.
- The Plesiosaur Is Coming - 27th of June 2021
I made a very quick 4-track EP, this time making use of the Hallucigenia and
Meganeura modules. It will be released for free, as usual, and hopefully soon.
HERE is a little 2-minute tease of one of the tracks :)
- Ichneumonid and Meganeura - 26th of June 2021
XTRTN 1.2.0 just came out this morning. There are two new modules (Ichneumonid and Meganeura), Hallucigenia can now memorise up to 16 different states at once, and Opabinia's distortion+waveshaping feature now supports polyphony. Modulo has been completely re-designed to be polyphonic and most importantly, better looking. Splitterburst has had a makeover too. Change log.
- - 16th of June 2021
Phuture Extratone is back!! Last year I gave Flyswatter permission to continue the old Phuture Extratone series, and he has done it!
The absolute mad lad! Give his work a listen:
Flyswatter Channel Feed
- Knobblybobbly - 15th of June 2021
XTRTN 1.1.4 is out. New graphics on Opabinia, Hallucigenia and Puzzlebox - including new knob images and an XTRTN logo. The new labels on Opabinia should make it easier to understand, and the backgrounds are now gradients (rather than traced bitmaps), so they shouldn't have the old nasty side-effect of slowing framerates. There are no new graphics on Modulo or Splitterburst as they will likely be replaced and deprecated before long.
- Website Improvements - 13th of June 2021
Deleted two old posts, merging them into one here. Basically, all that's happened is:
I've made the site scale properly on different devices,
put an HTTPS certificate on the website (so now browsers don't call it dangerous),
made the URLs prettier (so webpages don't have the php file extension),
and generally made the website a lot nicer to look at. Yeah that's it.
- Sample And Hallucinate - 2nd of June 2021
Upgrading Hallucigenia, already! Version 1.1.3 is here, adding two S&H features to Hallucigenia. They're really simple and boring to explain, so just check the manual. Anyway, these features are really really useful, meaning Hallucigenia saves you a lot of time and rack-space.
- Hail Hallucigenia - 30th of May 2021
At last, Hallucigenia has gone public! I think the VCV Rack team must be busy with v2 or something, as I've been waiting a whole week for this moment. It is a random sequencer with options on how you want to mutate it. Also a save/load system to give it some consistency - perhaps this could give it some evolutionary direction if you want a challenge! Yeah, this module is pretty complicated by my standards, worth checking out the guide on the Modules page. The less important news is I gave Splitterburst a x4 multiplier switch. I really should give it and the other modules the URW Gothic font treatment, it came out well for Hallucigenia methinks. Have fun with the new module~!
- Cambrian Lifeforms Caught On Video - 19th of May 2021
Video. Thank you Mucus, very cool.
- Make XTRTN Ugly Again - 17th of May 2021
New XTRTN 1.1.1 plugin is here. New graphics on the three main modules, but also some new features.
Opabinia now has an input for the distortion/waveshaping part, so you can distort non-drum sounds... or just make your drums extra distorted! There is also a new parameter allowing for the folded waveform to refold the folded sections N-times, making even nastier sounds. Finally there is an End-Of-Burst output on Splitterburst, so that your snare-rushes can be neatly followed-up.
See the change log.
- VCV XTRTN 1.1.0 - 13th of May 2021
The VCV library has finally updated!! Massive improvements to the Opabinia module, and an exciting new module: Splitterburst!
Just for fun, I have made a challenging puzzle module too, to test your VCV-rack skills against. Full details in the change log at the end of the new manual page.
- - 7th of May 2021
I have started work on Extratone oriented VCV Rack modules. For now, there is a bassdrum module (Opabinia) and a modulo-operator module (Modulo). You can add them to your rack here. More information can be found on the modules page. There will be much more ambitious/exciting modules in the near future.
- Thousand Plus Completion - 2nd of May 2021
Finally got all the (digital) 1000+ releases listed. Took my time, considering this sites been up for almost a year! Also, 175 entries in the library now! I imagine new additions to the library should be more interesting now, i.e. new music, XTRTN albums hiding in speedcore/noise labels, obscure hard-to-find/"lost" material, and so on. 200 releases here we come!
- Listen Fear Endure EP - 2nd of May 2021
New Eater of Sheep EP out on Gutter Cvnt!!
Get it on Bandcamp
watch it on Youtube! I had a slight change of plan and made another melodic track, "Lullabrrr", to go at the start. Expect more tracks like it in the future!
- Upcoming Melodic EP - 24th of April 2021
I could not contain the urge to make and record some melodic Extratone today. I had a mental-breakthrough and had to put the ideas into practice. It's a very quick-and-lazy track really, a 7 minute improvised live recording - but I'm very happy with it. I've sent it to Guttercvnt along with two other improvised tracks - fingers crossed it gets released. I would love to make a full album but I have nasty university deadlines this week, and I couldn't stop thinking about Extratone until I sent the tracks to somebody! Keep your eyes out for the 'Listen Fear Endure' EP by Eater of Sheep over on Guttercvnt!!
- Harvesting ArchiveDotOrg - 21st of April 2021
Been searching through archive.org directly for more links - lots of terrible audacity-low-effort tones with some really grim cover-arts. Might end up skipping over a few releases, don't want things to get too trashy on my cutesy-wootsy lil website. Added an artists tab to the website, just my page there at the moment. I believe MG Mucus is writing his own webpage right now so that's something to be excited about!
- 150 Releases Catalogued - 20th of April 2021
Yay! The library now has links to over 150 XTRTN-focused releases. Next steps will be more lists of reccomendations, more fancy graphics (I've added some glitchy effects to the title!) and a guide to producing XTRTN! I also like the idea of webpages about-and-designed-by individual artists - fingers crossed!
- SKRD130 - 19th of April 2021
V.A. - The Art of Destruction (SKRD!!!-130) came out yesterday. Not as much XTRTN as I'd hoped would get in there, but there is a remastered version of my Opabinia track and some delightful tones at the end of 'Disorder and Nothing Else' by The Mother Fucker. There may be more but I haven't listened to the whole compilation yet! Check for yourself!
- Approaching 150 - 19th of April 2021
Nearly at 150 releases in the library. Really scraped the bottom-of-the-barrel with some ironic shit-tones and some lazily-produced rubbish along the way, and I didn't want those clogging the front-page of my website. To keep the "newest library additions" section appealing, I've took a dive down the Kotaks and Pirtek rabbit-holes. It gets pretty difficult to tell the difference between distorted-noisy extratone and pure noise at times, so I've been listening carefully! EPs with Extratone in the name but no extratone content are the worst things in the world - looking at you: Annoying Ringtone and L'Homme Fatale. I was so excited to hear "Life and Times of an Extratone Slut"... (sigh). Got another Daisy Cutter release indexed btw, its always fun to find something thats not listed on discogs!
- MucusLivestreamsJtoneBlogpost - 17th of April 2021
I guess just saying "WOW JAPANESE EXTRATONES SO GOODD!!!111" isn't exactly news, but it needs saying. I've been adding links to some
releases from Fujimi Industry Records and been thoroughly impressed (re)listening to the tracks, well done to Seifuku Yangire and Monoqlom!! I'll add a 'J-tone' section to the styles+subgenres page soon - it is definitely a distinct listening experience.
For the sake of saying some actual news, MG Mucus is back and doing flexxy livestreams again - check them out!
- New Guttercvnt - 15th of April 2021
New Guttercvnt compilation! New XTRTN from Cywacror, Charlie Of Kent, Eater of Sheep, SKY98 and Nihilistic Torment. Lots of great speedcore too, I'm delighted to see Hexagen66 and Hersenerosie in there!
- Better News - 14th of April 2021
Now that the Guttercvnt compilations out, I've finally got a reason to do the news-system properly! News updates are also included in the RSS Feed! This is basically a test-post.
- 09.04.2021 - Made an RSS Feed for the website!
- 06.04.2021 - Added examples of various styles in the 'About' section. Also reworked definitions and explanations.
- 04.04.2021 - Finally added a news page to keep record of how the websites changing, and to show that it is indeed evolving.
I would like to make this system more "professional" with an RSS feed one day. I will also include posts about upcoming XTRTN compilations, events,
etc. in here.
- 30.03.2021 - Currently writing up a list of essential releases in the Library
